Investigative psychology is a new branch of legal psychology that seeks to introduce scientific standards and theoretical systematization into the field of investigation.
The main areas of interest are:
• Criminological profiling: an investigative methodology based on the analysis of available information related to a crime (collected evidence, crime scene details, autopsy and medical reports, and witness statements).
• Victimological analysis: the study of the victim’s characteristics and the interactive processes that connect the victim to the offender during the criminal act.
• Verification of text authenticity: the assessment of the reliability of testimony and the correctness of identification procedures (Art. 213 of the Italian Code of Criminal Procedure).
This discipline is based on the principle that behavior reflects the structure of an individual’s personality; therefore, analyzing a person’s actions allows for a better understanding of their motives and helps guide investigators during their inquiries.
