Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS)
In the context of disputes over child custody, a child disorder called Parental Alienation Syndrome may occur.PAS can be described as the result of a supposed “programming” of children by a pathological parent. In simple terms it is a kind of “brainwashing” that would lead the children to lose touch with reality, and exhibit a constant, and unfair hatred and contempt towards the other parent.
The techniques implemented by the “alienating” parent are:

• The use of derogatory terms referring to the other parent
• False accusations of neglect towards the child
• Verbal and/or physical violence that generates deep feelings of fear, mistrust, guilt and hatred toward the “alienated” parent in the child

The Italian Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (SINPIA) has guidelines on the subject of child abuse, published in 2007, and includes PAS as one of the possible forms of psychological abuse.
The long term effects of this phenomenon may cause a number of problems, including:

• Altered reality
• Narcissism
• Difficulties in showing empathy
• Lack of respect for authority
• Paranoia
• Psychopathologies related to gender identity
